Enjoy beautiful broadleaves such as hawthorn (<em>Crataegus intricata<\/em>), northern red oak (<em>Quercus rubra<\/em>), green ash (<em>Fraxinus pennsylvanica<\/em>), American elm (<em>Ulmus americana<\/em>) and silver maple (<em>Acer saccharinum<\/em>). If you follow the path from the meadow that leads up the hill you can find a large group of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"eastern white cedars (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arboretum-norr.se\/en\/the-arboretum-in-baggbole\/eastern-north-america\/eastern-white-cedar-stand\/\" target=\"_blank\">eastern white cedars<\/a> (<em>Thuja occidentalis<\/em>), here growing in its natural form and not as the slender cultivars you see in gardens.<br><br>On the upper side of Eastern North America, where <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"L\u00e4gdaleden (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arboretum-norr.se\/en\/accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\">L\u00e4gdaleden<\/a> passes, we have made new plantings of several broadleaves, e.g. several of the many maples and birches found in the region. Here we also find our rarest tree, an American chestnut (<em>Castanea dentata<\/em>). Rare in the sense that it is almost extinct from its natural habitat and that it is not expected to survive this far up north. This region\u2019s most common conifer, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arboretum-norr.se\/en\/the-arboretum-in-baggbole\/eastern-north-america\/balsam-firs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"balsam fir  (opens in a new tab)\">balsam fir <\/a>(<em>Abies balsamifera<\/em>) grows here too. The wild flora in this part of the arboretum is in itself spectacular, especially in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Fern valley  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arboretum-norr.se\/en\/the-arboretum-in-baggbole\/eastern-north-america\/fern-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fern valley <\/a>with enormous stands of our biggest fern, the ostrich fern (<em>Matteuccia struthiopteris<\/em>).
