The Ridge

Kammen

On top of a ridge in our Europe section, runs a path through big native trees such as scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), norway spruce (Picea abies) and aspen (Populus tremula). These trees have been here long before the arboretum was established and many of them are today impressive in size.

From here you have magnificent views all around. You can look down at the river (Umeälven) with both European silver firs (Abies alba) and common junipers (Juniperus communis) in the foreground. The junipers are a selection of individuals with a columnar/fastigiate/erect habitus collected in nearby areas. South of Sweden is also home to the worlds tallest common juniper, measuring over 17m in height. There is also a chance to gaze down in the biggest and wildest ravine in the area. We have only just recently started planting this area with native broad-leaved species. Future plans includes a pathway running through the ravine so visitors can experience the area up close.

If you take the the pathway all the way down you will reach the Auditorium. A couple of large, several hundred year old scot pines (Pinus sylvestris) is standing in the slope right next to the auditorium. Here you can have lectures, smaller performances and is also a popular stop during guided tours.
