Birds

The place has long been known among Umeå’s bird watchers as a very good spot for birding. During the years 2000-2024 no less than 131 different bird species have been observed in the area (a list of them can be found below). In the spring, you can hear most of the warblers who usually visit the Umeå area here.

Among the woodpeckers, you can find greater and lesser woodpecker, eurasian wryneck and black woodpecker nesting in or adjacent to the arboretum. The grey-headed woodpecker is also a frequent guest, and if you’re really lucky, you can also see such a rare bird as the white-backed woodpecker, in the arboretum, or at least the tracks it has left behind. As for woodpeckers, it is only the european green woodpecker that is conspicuous by its absence at the site, it is unusual for that species to be seen this far north.

In autumn, white-tailed eagles are often seen patrolling the river in search of fish that have become trapped when the river channel is emptied. Vagrant rarities such as red-flanked bluetail, Tarsiger cyanurus (2020) and common firecrest, Regulus ignicapilla (2023) have also visited the area.

We at Arboretum Norr have received the help of the incredibly bird-savvy Lars Edenius at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå to evaluate a list of birds. He has given the species a designation indicating their occurrence. In addition to this, Lars has also given us access to his audio recordings of birdsong from the arboretum (all 47 of the species, marked with an X in the list below). Many thanks Lars!

Where applicable, we also show bird pictures (for about twenty of the species, clickable at the bottom), which are all photographed in the Baggböle arboretum.
