Arbor Day har sedan länge varit etablerat i andra länder, men eftersom Sverige skamlöst saknar en officiell hyllningsdag till träden har vi under lång tid velat upprätta ett eget firande! Den 6 september 2025 sådde vi därför fröet till vår första fest i trädens ära, och vilken succé det blev!
Dagen startade med en performance och invigning av Luis Berríos-Negróns installation som utspelade sig runt om och i vår plantskola. (Läs mer om detta längre ned).
Efter den fantastiska invigningen fick alla hungriga äta grillad korv och alla kunskapstörstiga prata med utställarna, för att sedan bege sig ut på ett trädquiz. När quizzarna var klara var det dags för en guidad tur genom Sibirien, Östra Nordamerika och Kvarnängen för att till slut inträda den Japanska trädgården där Jakob Algesten stod för skönsång. Kvällen avslutades sedan vid eldstaden där vi drömde om hur vårt kommande frö, nu groddplanta bara kommer att växa sig större och större med åren!
On Saturday 06.9, at 12:00, Luis Berríos Negrón and collaborators will present the installation and performance titled Caudex at Arboretum Norr located in the neighbourhood of Baggböle in Umeå. The event will be part of Arboretets Dag hosted by the staff and friends of Arboretum Norr and is supported by Future Forests seed funding. All are welcome!
Caudex stages rudimentary tree nursing as an act of listening and speaking with treelings. The work is part of Luis’ UmArts postdoctoral project ‘Of tree nurseries and remediating the colonial memory of landscapes’ (https://www.umu.se/en/research/projects/of-tree-nurseries/), where he investigates tree nurseries between Puerto Rico, Denmark, and Sweden. The research looks at how tree nursing gives form and personhood to alternative imaginaries that sidestep past and future colonial histories of landscape and of geoengineering. Luis is a Puerto Rican environmental artist and experimental architect, serving as associate professor at the Arkitekthögskolan.
